Opening at the Solas Gallery, Ballinamore on Fri 7th October is the long awaited solo exhibition,” ART FOR ARTS SAKE”, an inspiring collection of oil paintings by Frank Desmond, aka Brolly. Originally from Dublin, Brolly has lived in Leitrim since the mid eighties. Now living where he passes one of the areas` well known beauty spots each time he leaves his house, Poul na Easa waterfall just outside Ballinamore, it is no wonder that he is so well known in the area for his paintings of the local country side, its people and their activities, but this exhibition has gone further than that. Brolly is a dedicated painter, he spends as much time as possible painting, as the title says, For Arts Sake. Part of his commitment to art is the time he gave to helping set up the Ballinamore Artists Group and Solas gallery of which he was an active and creative Chairperson for a while. He is a firm believer in the place of the local artist in the wider scheme of the art world.
The collection of 27 paintings goes beyond the local scenes, but there are some ;”From theMountain”, a view from the old coal pits on Slieve an Iariann; the “Dolmen at Lough Scur”;”the Colt” and a lovely comment on the fast disappearing easy way of life in Leitrim, “Time of Day” are a few of them. Brolly feels greatly influenced by the work of Temara de Lempicka, who left Poland in the 20s and his portrait of her is very eye catching, as are two others in this style “Apple Seller” and “LadyBiker”. He is experimenting with ideas, with his own thoughts and images, “Leaking Light”, a series concerned with inner space lit from outside `; “Exercise in Green” are pictures done on a continous line, work that is ongoing. There is fun and colour, “Scatter Cushions of Desire” and” Lizard Grass” being two of them.
The exhibition will open on Fri October 7th at 7.30pm and will be launched by Dick Hinchy. Dick is a long term friend of Brolly`s and feels he has known the paintings in this exhibition almost before they were painted. The exhibition, “Art for Arts Sake” will be open until 29th October but if you cannot make the opening night p-lease do call in to see the work. The Solas Gallery is above the Four Seasons Garden Centre, Main Street, Ballinamore.
