Aisling Blackburn and Carmel Baker Press Release

LOCAL ARTISTS AT SOLAS GALLERY

Fri June 18th sees the opening of two diverse exhibitions by local artists Carmel Baker and Aisling Blackburn.  “ The Whole Wild World “ by Carmel Baker gives us glimpses and fragments of the animal world both wild and domestic whereas Aisling Blackburn`s “Hone” is looking at life in an everyday,  spiritual way.
“ The Whole Wild World “ is Carmel Baker`s first solo exhibition although she has shown her work at the members exhibitions previously. She moved from Dublin to Aghacashel, Co. Leitrim a few years ago to be closer to the wildlife and pursue her career as an artist.  Carmel`s love of animals and art are inseparable, from studying and photographing killer whales off the coast in Canada, volunteering at Zoos in the US and Ireland, her love of all things furred, feathered and scaled has been a life long passion. Her desire and passion to interpret the nature and expression of these animals is very obvious in her art. She works in pastels, one of the more difficult mediums to use, with a natural talent and sensitivity. There will be about 18 pictures, ranging from the exotic, like the “Humming Bird” and “Cheetah” to a beautifully soulful “ Red Setter” , playful Dolphins and the eye catching “Watcher in the Water”, Carmel`s exhibition really is a piece of the whole wild world.
“Hone” is also Aisling Blackburn`s first solo exhibition leading on from exhibiting successfully in the joint show “Cuig” last year.  The title refers to a need to go over and over an object or event until there is completion. This can be seen in the many facets of her exhibition and her work. Aisling came to Leitrim 10 years ago and lives near Ballinamore with her daughter Niamh. She is involved in many community projects  including gardening, cooking, environmental awareness as well as an interest in Traditional music. Her community writing project is part of “Hone”; Aisling made a series of 5 books, sent them for contributions to writers and artists and they will be on display. The exhibition is in various media, watercolour, acrylic, pen and ink, photography, each piece showing progress, completion, part of everyday life. This is well illustrated with “Pre Madonna and Child” a lively pen & ink study  for the vibrant “Native Madonna and Child” painting. Effectively simple Pen & inks, e.g. “Black and White” contrast well with her paintings , the softness of “Curtains” or the Impressionistic “Bray Esplanade”. There will be about 30 works in all.
The two exhibitions will be jointly opened by local writer, Michael Harding on Fri 18th June @7.30pm. That is a modest description of Michael who has written for film both here and abroad and received a number of awards for his work. Among other things he was Writer in Association at the National Theatre, 1993 writer in residence at Trinity College 1999 and became a member of Aosdona, the National Academy for Creative Artists, in 2000. A truely appropriate person to open these exhibitions and the Solas Gallery  appreciates his commitment to this.  The exhibitions will be open until 10th July , Mon-Sat; 10-6.
